Presenting the Margaret C. Winston Madison Opera Center
On September 16, 2013, Madison Opera officially opened the doors to the Madison Opera Center; it was officially dedicated in honor of Dr. Margaret Winston on November 2, 2014.
Located at 335 W. Mifflin Street, just one block from Overture Center’s Stage Door, our new home is both our artistic home and our administrative home. It features:
- The Millie & Marshall Osborn Rehearsal Hall – 4,600 square feet of rehearsal space, with a sprung wood floor, high ceilings, and large windows, and a grand piano
- The Kay & Martin Barrett Rehearsal Studio – a 650 square foot rehearsal studio with an upright piano, perfect for smaller rehearsals
- The Lau & Bea Christensen Office Suite – our offices, two meeting rooms, open work space, and more
- The Michael Klos Music Library – featuring thousands of opera and classical recordings
And much more! Explore the sections in the Discover

A Letter from
Kathryn Smith, General Director
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost five years since Madison Opera first quietly began looking for a home. With the help of an anonymous friend, about two years ago we found the perfect location and opportunity just one block from our performing home, the Overture Center for the Arts. When we purchased the space in July 2012, it had a dirt floor, no walls, and no HVAC system. We literally began dreaming from scratch, and it’s amazing that it came to fruition so fast.
We started the public campaign for the Opera Center in fall 2012, and the generosity of our Madison Opera family has been both inspiring and humbling. We have received over 180 gifts so far, in sizes from $10 to six-digits, totaling $1.4 million. We cannot thank our supporters enough for all of their gifts, words of encouragement, words of caution, ideas, countless volunteer hours, and friendship.
But we still need your help. Although we have moved into the Madison Opera Center, we still have a long way to go. The more we can raise towards our total campaign goal, the more resources we can direct to providing all the artistic tools that any group using the rehearsal space might need, and the stronger the move towards long-term financial stability for the Opera.
Naming opportunities within the Center are still available and donor recognition benefits are plentiful. Donations of $250 and above will get their name on our Pillars of Philanthropy in the Millie and Marshall Osborn Rehearsal Hall. This is truly our family tree, and I hope you will add your name to it.
All donations are tax-deductible and very much appreciated.
You can make a donation online. For more information, or to discuss naming opportunities or a multi-year pledge, please contact Beth Tolles at 608-238-8085 or e-mail us at email@example.com.
